Notre Dame Vision: Liturgical Music Ministers

July 17–21, 2017

Notre Dame Vision asks its participants: God is calling. How will you answer?

Liturgical musicians have responded to that call. They have acknowledged that God has blessed them with musical talent. They have cultivated and honed that talent through years of education and practice. Moreover, these individuals have placed their gifts at the service of God and the Church by choosing to minister as liturgical musicians.

Guided by the wisdom set forth in the document Sing to the Lord (§50), Notre Dame Vision for Liturgical Music Ministers (a partnership between the Notre Dame Center for Liturgy and Notre Dame Vision) seeks to provide a formation opportunity that will cultivate personal and ministerial growth for the liturgical musician in the use of these gifts.

“…based on their baptismal call to discipleship…”

Notre Dame Vision LMM is interested in forming the liturgical music minister, not simply as a performer, but as a disciple. This formation is a lifelong process. Just as one must never stop

practicing in order to continue improving as a musician, one must never stop discerning and seeking ways to grow in love of God and neighbor as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Notre Dame Vision LMM seeks to provide the liturgical musician with new insights and ideas regarding the nature of vocation and the process of vocational discernment in order to cultivate an ever-deepening relationship with Jesus Christ.

“…grounds them in a love for and knowledge of Scripture, Catholic teaching, Liturgy, and music…”

Only one who knows God can love God, and only one who loves God can truly serve God. This is the case for those in liturgical music ministry, who spend hours, days, weeks, months not only in planning and rehearsing, but also in meeting with parishioners to minister to them in the heights of joy and the depths of grief. Delving into the mysteries of Scripture, Catholic teaching, and the liturgy offers a wellspring of new life and energy that will flow into the music itself. By growing in their knowledge and love of God, the liturgical music minister is better able to serve God and the Church.
Notre Dame Vision LMM seeks to provide a scriptural, liturgical, and spiritual formation that leads to a fuller appreciation for the richness of prayer, inviting the attendees to appropriate these insights into their ministry.

“…equips them with the musical, liturgical, and pastoral skills to serve the Church at prayer.”

It is important to remember that artistic excellence and the desire to serve are not mutually exclusive. Liturgical music ministry becomes mere performance when artistic excellence is cultivated for its own sake rather than for the sake of assisting the Church in praising God. Equally, the desire to praise God through music is not sufficient unless one becomes an excellent musician.
Notre Dame Vision LMM seeks to provide new insights regarding the unique path of discipleship of the liturgical musician in which musical excellence, knowledge of the liturgy, and pastoral sensitivity complement one another in ways that are fruitful for the individual performer and the life of the Church.
