McGrath Institute for Church Life

Notre Dame Center for Liturgy

Our vision, situated within the wider commitments of the McGrath Institute for Church Life, is to be the premier theological center for liturgical renewal in this country, maintaining a connection between the mysteries of faith, liturgical celebration, and an ever deepening liturgical spirituality.  This vision of liturgical prayer is the historical foundation of liturgical education at Notre Dame from Michael Mathis, C.S.C. to Aidan Kavanagh, O.S.B.  We strive, in particular, to serve:

  • Graduate students and professors, engaging in liturgical scholarship, hopeful that their theological queries might benefit the life of the Church.

  • Parish liturgists and musicians, discerning how their ministry may be better informed by the historical and theological principles of the liturgy.

  • Catechists and campus ministers, integrating sacramental preparation and mystagogy, into a comprehensive formation into Christian faith.

  • The faculty, staff, and students of Notre Dame, desiring to move from the signs of prayer to a prayerful understanding of the mysteries being celebrated.

  • Bishops, priests, and deacons wanting to craft persuasive, catechetical homilies and reflect upon ways of celebrating the rites in a truly beautiful way.

  • The lay person committed to understanding how the practice of liturgical prayer, both at home and in their parish, will capacitate the Christian to offer the sacrifice of love defining of the baptismal priesthood.
